Musical Saw Page
Welcome to my web page. I'm Charles Hindmarsh from Leeds, West Yorkshire in the UK.

I've been playing the musical saw since about 1984 after
seeing a demonstration on a BBC television programme. At first I
tried to use a normal saw from my Dad's tool kit, which worked,
but it was a little painful to play, especially if my hand
slipped. A few years later I met a musical saw busker in
Harrogate (UK) who gave me some details about the Mussehl &
Westphal company USA) which is where I purchased my first
musical saw from.
The M&W Tenor saw, or "C" saw as I call it, is an
excellent saw to begin on as it is very flexible and easy on the
hands. It is also a good instrument to play with a group as the
high voice sings over other musical instruments.
Playing the saw with a string bass bow allows you to create a
much bigger sound and increases the dynamic range of the
instrument which is handy if you play, as I have, with brass
bands such as the Yorkshire
Evening Post Band and the Knaresborough
Silver Band. As well as being a musical saw soloist with a
band, I occasionally play for other concerts or musical groups
and I have also taken part in the "BBC music live"
event in the north.
I am always looking out for new concerts or groups to play with. My repertoire ranges from the light classics to popular pieces including songs from the musicals and film music. If you ever need an unusual musician (and a musical saw player !!) with an awful sense of humour or you would just like some help with playing the musical saw then you can contact me at
Tayers in the UK. If you're one of these musicians and are pas
